I was thinking recently about how sometimes, on some days your mind feels cluttered and divided; like all the noise in the world seems to drown out your thought, or at the very least, interrupts them. Find yourself amid all the noise — the kind of noise that comes from the world, from other people, and from your own mind. How do we get past it, or maybe use it for good? Our craft sometimes needs the kick we get from outside noise. This is my observation but might just be something helpful in there for you too!
Finding Yourself Among All the Noise
We live in a world that never stops talking. Notifications ping, opinions blurt, expectations back up, and somewhere in the middle of it all, you feel as though you’re fading into the background. It’s no wonder so many people feel disconnected from themselves and others — not because they don’t know who they are, but because the noise around them is simply too loud to hear what their minds have to say.
Digging through the noise requires an ongoing effort. It’s a practice of cutting through what isn’t yours so you can finally hear what is in your heart.
The Noise That Drowns Us Out
Noise isn’t just sound. It’s anything that pulls you away from your inner voice. The direction you’d go if it wasn’t there.
We are gripped by:
- External noise: social media, news, other people’s opinions
- Internal noise: self‑doubt, overthinking, old places and feelings that just don’t belong there anymore
- Emotional noise: stress, fear, mental wounds, others' expectations
When all of these layers stack up, you start living reactively instead of proactively. Among all the crap out there, you are still you. It exists with or without that kind of stimulation.
Why We Lose Ourselves
Losing yourself doesn’t happen in one dramatic moment. It happens slowly. Giving yourself away happens when you say yes when you really mean to say no or feel obligated to follow trends instead of your instincts. When was the last time you compared your life to someone else’s highlight reel? Sometimes outside pressure makes us move so fast we forget to check in on ourselves. Identity gets blurry when the barrage of data is thrown at you instead of allowing you to reflect.
How to Find Yourself Again
We need to create quiet on purpose. Clarity doesn’t always show up in chaos. Even five minutes of intentional quiet can shift everything.
Try to sit for a time without your phone or other media masters. Close your eyes and breathe deeply and slowly. Allow thoughts to settle. I like to picture stars, or clouds. Something that has no beginning or ending and just is there. Inanimate.
It’s sometimes difficult to find yourself but feel for what seems like you. Your body often knows before your mind does. Pay attention to the things that energize you and what zaps your energy. What thoughts or feelings are heavy? What weighs on your mind. Having a chance to check in allows your internal compass to find “you.”
Another trap we fall into is doing or acting in a way that others expect us to, not actually what we want to do, or need to do. Are you acting because its something you want, or are you looking for the approval of others? Your truth often hides beneath layers of “should.”
Reconnect With What Matters
Finding yourself is really about remembering what you value. Reflect on what brings you joy (my sister’s favorite saying), ro what make you feel alive. What would you pursue if fear didn’t stand in your way? Consider the fact that your values are the anchor in the storm.
Let Yourself Evolve. You’re not supposed to stay the same. Give yourself permission to reach beyond the old version of yourself and redefine what you want. Push yourself to walk away from what no longer fits your life or personality.
Think of ways to Come Back to Yourself
Sit somewhere quiet and ask, what do I need to do right now? What is one thing that feels true? Check‑in with yourself to rebuild your connection to yourself.
A Closing Thought
Not all people are outdoor people, but I feel a walk in nature forces your mind to slow down and smell the roses, so to speak. This subject came up because this week, I seemed to suffer from clutter of the mind. Looking into it, I found that I’m not the only one and discovering a few tricks to get back on course can very well help others.
